A smooth coated dog need only brushing with a soft brush. Do not use a wire brush – the goal is to remove dead hair and stimulate the skin.Broken and rough coated dogs should be hand stripped. http://www.terrier.com/advice/grooming2.php3 is a good basic guide to grooming a dog with a rough coat. The same guidelines can be followed for a broken coat.
Nails should be kept short.. If the hook is cut off each week you can keep this under control and it doesn't become a traumatic experience for either you or the dog. Get in the habit of taking a small snip (1 millimeter) off of each nail weekly, and reward your pup with little treats after every few toes. In this way, he will grow up with nail-jobs being a normal part of life. Use human fingernail clippers until your pup’s nails are larger. "Millers Forge" and "Resco" are good brands of dog nail clippers.. The "Resco" brand has replaceable blades so might be the best buy in the long run.
A dog nail consists of a living inner part called the `quick' and a dead outer part. The thickness of the dead outer layer is on the order of 2-3 millimeters (only about 1/10 of an inch) on an adult nail. In trimming nails, you want to cut or grind away the dead outer part of the nail without cutting into the quick. If you get into the quick, your pup will yell (because it hurts!) and bleed. If you happen to quick a nail, don't panic. If you cut too much off, the nail will bleed - a little "Kwik-Stop" will stop the bleeding right away. If "Kwik-Stop" isn't available, dragging the nail across a bar of soap will do the trick, but it is not as effective. If this becomes part of your regular grooming routine, you will find that he will learn to accept it quite willingly - if you only do it occasionally it will be much more difficult for everyone.
Daily (This daily routine can be cut down to every other day once he has learned to cooperate):
Give him a quick brushing with a soft brush
Clean dirt from around eyes
Handle his feet and ears
Check his teeth
Weekly:
Trim his nails
Monthly, or as needed:
Trim hair from penis or vulva; it quickly becomes caked with dried urine.
Twice a year:
Hand strip your rough or broken coated dog. In between, brush the coat against the grain and pull out any long hairs.
